No. Valve doesn’t ban CS2 or CS:GO players by IP address: VAC bans and CS2 game bans are attached to your Steam account. The places where an IP ban can actually happen are individual community servers, and the one thing Valve does document beyond a single account is the phone number linked to it.
Below is what each type of ban actually hits, based on what Valve and Faceit publish, and which parts are only forum rumor.
Is a VAC ban an IP ban?
No. Steam Support describes VAC as an automated system that detects cheats on your computer. If an account connects to a VAC-secured server with an identifiable cheat running, that account is banned from VAC-secured servers for that game. Your IP isn’t mentioned anywhere.
Other documented details:
- VAC bans are permanent, and Steam Support won’t remove them. The exception is a ban Valve decides was wrong. In October 2023 Valve reversed VAC bans tied to incompatible AMD graphics drivers in CS2.
- Reports alone don’t cause a VAC ban.
- It doesn’t matter who was playing. If a friend cheated on your account, the ban stays.
- If someone cheats through your Family Sharing library, your account can be banned too.
- A banned account can still play single-player, LAN, and servers that aren’t VAC-secured.
The phone number rule
This is the closest Valve gets to banning more than one account. VAC bans apply to every account sharing a phone number at the time of the infraction, even accounts that don’t own the game. Valve says this isn’t enabled for every game. The number itself isn’t blacklisted and can go straight onto a new account.
So switching your IP does nothing for a VAC ban. Sharing a phone number with a cheater’s account can.
CS2 game bans
A game ban is separate from VAC. Valve issues them for cheating, rank manipulation, botting, and deliberately interfering with servers or other players. Valve won’t tell you the reason, there’s no appeal, and items can’t be moved off the banned account. It’s account-level too, and IP addresses aren’t mentioned.
VAC Live, Overwatch and Trust Factor
CS2 added more layers on top of VAC. None of them are IP-based either.
- VAC Live: since the June 6, 2023 update to the CS2 limited test, VAC can ban a player mid-match and end the match at the end of the round. That’s the “match cancelled” screen.
- VacNet 3.0: on August 19, 2024, Valve said it had started testing it on a limited set of matches.
- Overwatch: the April 25, 2024 update added it back so “trusted partners” can review match demos. Valve hasn’t said much more.
- Trust Factor: Valve uses your CS2 and Steam history to decide who you’re matched with. There’s no way to see your score. Valve says phone numbers and CS2 rank are among the factors, and a party queues at its lowest Trust Factor.
Can you get IP banned on CS2 at all?
On a community server, yes. Valve says server owners can ban players for any reason and it can’t step in. On CS:GO servers the console had banid for SteamID bans and addip for IP bans, so admins could use either. If you’re banned from lots of community servers at once, Valve says that’s usually a shared third-party ban list.
An IP ban from a community server only affects that server. Matchmaking, Premier and your Steam account are untouched.
Why Valve doesn’t use IP bans
Valve hasn’t given a reason, so this is the practical explanation. Households, dorms, internet cafés and mobile carriers put many people behind one IP, so IP bans hit innocent players. Many home IPs also change on their own. A Steam account with a phone number is a better handle on a person.
What about hardware bans?
Valve’s VAC and game ban pages don’t mention hardware or HWID bans. Forum posts claim it both ways, and Valve hasn’t confirmed any of it, so treat it as rumor. Valve does say hardware configurations and driver updates won’t trigger a VAC ban.
Faceit is different, and it says so in writing:
- Faceit bans apply to the person, not just the account. Making a new account or deleting the old one doesn’t get around it.
- Faceit lists “playing on hardware that has previously received a ban from us” as not a valid reason to lift a cheating ban.
- A cheating ban on Faceit is 5 years, with 2 more years for every ban evasion attempt, escalating to permanent (as of the Season 9 policy from August 5, 2026).
- You can only hold one Faceit account, and a Steam account from a deleted one can’t be relinked.
So on Faceit, a new IP or a fresh Steam account won’t help you, and the PC itself can count against you.
Where cheat software fits in
Valve’s rule is simple: no VAC ban unless you connect to a VAC-secured server with a cheat running, even one meant for offline use.
That’s why the NinjaHackz CS2 overlay is meant for offline setups. It’s a portable Windows tool with ESP, aim assist and radar for studying angles and spray patterns against bots or on a private server. The setup docs cover running it. No tool is undetectable, and using one on VAC-secured servers or Faceit puts your account at risk under the rules above.
Built for local experimenting and training — private lobbies, bots, and practice. Not for cheating on competitive servers (including Faceit and other anti-cheat matchmaking). Use responsibly and within our Terms.
FAQ
Does CS2 ban your IP?
No. Valve’s VAC bans and CS2 game bans are applied to Steam accounts. Only individual community server admins can ban an IP, and that only affects their server.
Does a VAC ban affect other accounts on the same PC?
Valve documents two ways a VAC ban can spread: accounts sharing the same phone number at the time of the infraction, and Family Sharing if someone cheats using your library. Valve doesn’t say anything about banning other accounts just because they share a PC.
Will changing my IP or using a VPN remove a VAC ban?
No. The ban is on the account, so a new IP changes nothing. VAC bans are permanent unless Valve finds one was issued in error.
Does Valve issue hardware (HWID) bans in CS2?
Valve hasn’t documented hardware bans. Claims that it does come from player reports, not Valve. Faceit, on the other hand, says playing on hardware that was previously banned is not a valid reason to lift a ban.
Can I play CS2 with a VAC ban?
You can still play offline, against bots, on LAN, and on servers that aren’t VAC-secured. VAC-secured matchmaking is off limits for that account.
